arrived with their parents at mcmillan elementary school. kindergarten classrooms are limited to 21 students in order to provide one-on-one interaction with the teacher. superintendent pat skorkowsky believes a six hour day of learning sets the foundation for a successful future. ((pat skorkowsky superintendent, clark county school district: one of the things that we found is many of our students don't have a pre kindergarten experience. this is their first experience in school and with a half day kindergarten program, three hours, makes it very difficult to not only teach the skills that they need to be successful in school writing, and the math.)) >> last year, state legislators approved the funding for full-day kindergarten... allocating 142-million dollars. that money also provides two meals for all kindergarten students. ((kirsten joyce)) and making sure all those students get to school safely is the focus of police this week.. police will be watching for dangerous driving behaviors in and around schools. north las vegas police had a strong presence at this elementary school and cheyenne and alexander this morning. sergeant sean walker says the goal is to educate drivers; (( sgt. sean walker, nlvpd : you have to be aware of the school zone that are around you though, because some are in effect all throughout the school day, some are only in effect when students ar around. )) ((kirsten joyce)) >> any minor violation in a school zone will result in four
calendar year--- your license can be revoked./// ((kirsten joyce)) for the last week.. the push for the school district has been to make sure everyone is enrolled. a week ago.. about 90-thousand students had not yet. enrollment must be done online through ccsd's infinite campus. infinite campus can also be accesed at any school or library. and everyone must register every year. a legislative bill that now bases funding on the average of the total enrollment of each school day. so that means funding could be lost if students are not signed up many of you are sharing back to school pictures on our 8 newsnow facebook page. ruby said 5th and 3rd grade.. buses on time.. what more could you ask for. and elizabeth said.. first day of 3rd grade.. he was excited. the man killed in a shootout with an n-h-p trooper on friday has been identified. troopers say 41-year-old matthew gibbon in a car with two other people.. when they were pulled over for a traffic violation.. near boulder highway and u-s 95. gibbon fled the car and the trooper chased after him. he shot at the trooper.. who returned fire. a bullet hit the trooper in his bulletproof vest and badge.. but he is expected to be okay. the trooper has been placed on routine administrative leave penn /// ((kirsten joyce)) nfl quarterback colin kaepernick (kap-er-nick) is doubling down on his refusal to stand for the national anthem. he says he will remain seated until things change... even if it costs him his job. hena daniels has reaction from his team-mates and coaches. ("when i say begin, i would like u letters of the alphabet out loud.") researchers studying the link between mobility and cognition are using a new approach: a real-time imaging system called fnirs (f-neers), functional near-infrared spectroscopy. fnirs uses light to monitor changes in blood oxygenation in a person's pre-frontal cortex. "which is involved in many important higher order functionings, like task switching, organization,
